HURLEY (FRANK) 'In the Catacombs' [leading to the hut at Cape Denison, with Lt. Belgrave Ninnis in the foreground], vintage gelatin silver print, on the original thick card mount, original Fine Art Society Exhibition label, with pencil title and exhibition number '61' on verso, corners slightly worn, 330 x 458mm., [Between 1911-1914] Footnotes: Lt. Belgrave Ninnis (1887-1912), educated at Dulwich College like Ernest Shackleton, was in charge of the dogs during Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Depicted here at work digging tunnels underneath the base camp, Ninnis was later selected to be a part of the three-man sledging team, the Far Eastern Party, together with Mawson and Mertz. During this he lost his life on 14 December 1912, falling into the crevasse of a glacier. Mawson recalled that 'For three hours we called unceasingly but no answering sound came back... A chill draught was blowing out of the abyss. We felt that there was little hope'. Mertz himself died some three weeks later.
