Attributed to Giovanni Jean Schranz (Maltese, 1794-1882) A view of Grand Harbour, Valletta, Malta watercolour 34.6 x 51.1cm (13 5/8 x 20 1/8in). Footnotes: In a letter by Antonio Espinosa Rodriguez, Curator of Fine Arts at the Maritime Museum in Malta, written in 1994, he provides a detailed description of the present watercolour which reads: '[This] painting offers an extensive and lively view of Grand Harbour taken from below the rump paths of Valletta, at a point popularly known as Taht iz-Ziemel; a rocky part of water-front....In the foreground there are four figures in the characteristic dress of 19th century Maltese fishermen, one is actually seen repairing a net. Nearby is a firilla with four rowers. The paddle steamer in the centre of the composition flies the French flag and could possibly be the Leonidas which served in the Malta-Marseilles run.....A British man o war is just visible from behind the Fort Saint Angelo. The scene represented must have been a very common sight during the third quarter of the 19th century.'
