Kimbei, Photographer, Honcho-Dori, Yokohama') inside upper cover, contents loose, contemporary pictorial lacquered boards, detached and without spine, large oblong 8vo (180 x 268mm.), [1880s] Footnotes: Album of photographs by Kusakabe Kimbei, 'an exceptional artist and photographer' (Terry Bennett, Photography in Japan 1853-1912, 2006), who had worked as an for to Felice Beato and Baron Raimund von Stillfried before establishing his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. Includes 19 'portrait' or group studies, including a Samurai, tattooed man, women playing checkers, eating rice, sleeping, whipping cotton, letter writing, and displaying their obi, a girl in 'snow costume' and in 'wind costume', and others.
