Dr Edward Adrian Wilson (British, 1872-1912) Hyde Park Corner from the top of St George's Hospital inscribed 'Hyde Park. W./Sep. 1896./Ted' (lower left) watercolour heightened with white and traces of pencil 33.9 x 23.1cm (13 3/8 x 9 1/8in). Footnotes: Dr Edward Wilson is widely known as a polar explorer, having been involvement in both the Discovery and Terra Nova Expeditions in the Antarctic. His artistic skills came at an early age, when he began drawing pictures of the wildlife at his family's farm. This hobby stayed with him and he often acted as expedition artist alongside his position as surgeon on these polar expeditions. This particular watercolour was completed in 1896. At this time, Wilson was studying for his Batchelor of Medicine degree at St George's Hospital Medical School, therefore it is likely that he captured this scene whilst on a brief break from his studies.
