Aware of the conflicting information promulgated by many Europeans, Kolb recorded his voyages in part 'to oblige the learned and curious part of the world with a useful and entertaining history of a country and people, of whom we have had hitherto such various and uncertain accounts'' (Howgego). Kolbe (1675-1726) lived at the Cape from 1705 till 1713, and based his account on first hand experience. Provenance: Lavington bookplate.
