James (Lt. Col.) George (British, 1782-1828) Chittagong from Kuttaulgunge signed and dated 'J George August 1821' (to margin lower right); inscribed 'CHITTAGONG/From Kuttaulgunge' (to margin lower centre) watercolour 19 x 25.1cm (7 1/2 x 9 7/8in). James George arrived in India in October 1799, where he served with the 7th and the 25th Bengal Native Infantry (the latter from 1804). In 1811, George accompanied Governor General Lord Minto as Supernumerary ADC to the expedition from Calcutta to Java. Minto referred to George in a letter as an 'excellent draughtsman', and indeed George executed a number of large and scrupulously detailed watercolours of Penang, Melaka and Bogor. After returning to India in 1812, George served as Commandant of the Chittagong Provincial Battalion in East Bengal until 1823. A year later he transferred as a Lieutenant-Colonel to the 57th Native Infantry. In 1826, he married Charlotte Kennet in London before returning to India, until his death in 1828. This watercolour was executed during his 11 year posting to Chittagong (now the principal port of Bangladesh) from 1812 to 1823.
