Robert Houston RSW (British, 1891-1942) 'Iona Cathedral' signed 'Robert Houston' (lower right), titled (to exhibition label, verso) watercolour 23 x 39.5cm (9 1/16 x 15 9/16in). Footnotes: Exhibited Glasgow, Glasgow Art Club, (possibly 1927), cat.no.3 Also attached to the backboard, is a letter from the artist, dated 17 March 1928. 'Dear Sir, Having now recovered from a breakdown caused by over-work I am dealing with a mass of correspondence which accumulated, and amongst my letters I have come across a very pleasing one from you, expressing pleasure at a picture of mine of 'Iona Cathedral' purchased by you at the Glasgow Art Club Exhibition. I trust my picture will continue to remind you of your visit to Iona - it is a delightful little island and has a wonderful fascination for everyone. Your wife and yourself will pay a return visit (everybody does) and should you do so this summer my wife and I would be pleased if you would call at Lorne Cottage, a little house we have taken for June and July.
