A George III silver two-handled soup tureen William Burwash and Richard Sibley, London 1810 Oval bellied form with gadroon rim, the part fluted handles with leaf junctions, on four leaf-capped scroll feet, one side with engraved armorial and motto 'PRO REGE ET RELIGIONE' and the cover engraved with a crest, issuing from a mural coronet gules and arm embowed in armour holding in the hand a grenade flamed proper (Boycott), the shaped-dome cover with a fluted band and carrying handle, length handle to handle 40.5cm, weight 124oz. Footnotes: These are the impaled arms of Thomas BOYCOTT (1771-1856) of Rudge Hall, Pattingham, Shropshire and his wife Jane TARLETON (1777-1845) who was born at Whitchurch, Shropshire. They were married in 1801. The blazon: Gules, on a chief argent, three grenades flamed proper (Boycott). – impaling – gules, a chevron or between three cinquefoils argent (Tarleton) Thomas BOYCOTT was the son and heir of Thomas BOYCOTT (1734-1798) of Rudge Hall by Jane PULESTON (1739-1803) of Pickhill, Denbighshire. The family had owned the Rudge Hall estate for a number of generations. Jane TARLETON was the eldest daughter of Thomas TARLETON (1753-1820) of Bolesworth Castle, Cheshire by Mary ROBINSON (1750-1812) of Clitheroe, Lancashire. The family of BOYCOTT are known throughout the world after there name was first used in a revolt in Ireland where they were landowners who were 'boycotted' by their tenants.
