HALL (RADCLYFFE) The Well of Loneliness... with a Commentary by Havelock Ellis, FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, light spotting and toning to half-title and final leaf, publisher's black cloth gilt lettered on spine, spine ends bumped, a few white paint marks on sides, dust-jacket (spine and folds age soiled, short tear at head of spine, small loss at upper margin of lower cover and fold corners), 8vo, Jonathan Cape, [1928] Footnotes: First edition of Hall's pioneering The Well of Loneliness, 'a serious if sentimental treatment of lesbianism which was the occasion of great controversy when it was published in 1928', which led to the book being banned, the chief magistrated having demanded that 'all copies be destroyed, and that literary merit was no grounds for defence' (ODNB).
