Translated from the third German edition, by Samuel Moore and Edward Aveling and edited by Frederick Engels, fourth edition, SIGNED BY ELEANOR MARX AND EDWARD AVELING on the title-page, fourth edition, toned, publisher's maroon cloth, gilt lettering on spine, text-block detached from spine, worn (mostly to extremities of spine), 8vo, Swan Sonnenschein & Co., 1891 Footnotes: EARLY ENGLISH EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST INFLUENTIAL WORKS IN WORLD HISTORY, FROM THE LIBRARY OF ELEANOR MARX AND THE CO-TRANSLATOR EDWARD AVELING. Eleanor Marx (1855-1898) was the youngest daughter of Karl Marx and a key figure in socialist activism who played a vital role in the labour movement and women's rights advocacy. She co-founded the Socialist League and was active in the Second International. Her personal life was troubled, especially due to her tumultuous relationship with Edward Aveling (1849-1898), whose infidelity and financial issues deeply affected her. Tragically, Eleanor committed suicide in 1898, a decision some say was influenced by the discovery of Aveling's marriage with Eva Frye, a young actress and his mistress. The exact circumstances of her untimely death remain unclear, however, some circles of the socialist community generally blamed Aveling for Eleanor's death. Provenance: Eleanor Marx and Edward Aveling, signatures on title-page; purchased by the present owner at a Labour Party book sale in Guildford in the early 1980s.
