POTTER (BEATRIX) The Tailor of Gloucester, FIRST EDITION, PRIVATELY PRINTED, LIMITED TO 500 COPIES, colour frontispiece and 15 colour plates, occasional light spotting, publisher's pictorial pink boards with vignette of three mice sewing, rounded spine, boards faintly spotted [Linder p. 420; Quinby 3], 16mo, [Strangeways], December 1902; together with a letter by Leslie Linder to 'Mrs. Holland' dated June 1967 (2) Footnotes: The Tailor of Gloucester was Beatrix Potter's personal favourite of all her published books. It was first told in a letter from Beatrix to Freda Moore, daughter of her former governess, Annie Carter. The text of this privately printed edition is substantially longer than in the published edition. 'Evidently, with some regret, Beatrix Potter crossed through the eight or nine pages of text where she had described in detail how Simpkin wandered through the streets of Gloucester on the night of Christmas Eve, where all the animals were talking, and the carol singers were singing. This is the part of the story which contains the majority of her rhymes and verses - but Warnes had asked for 'cuts'!' (Linder, p.117).
