Allen, 1978, FIRST EDITIONS, publishers' cloth, 8vo; and 2 others (10) Footnotes: PRESENTED TO HER LOVER Ambrose Heal, the founder of Heal's department store. Smith worked at Heal's for nearly a decade beginning in 1923, during which time she became romantically involved with Heal. He gave her the Underwood typewriter on which she wrote, in 1929, her first play, Autumn Crocus. This and her following two plays, Service and Touch Wood, were published under the pseudonym 'C.L. Anthony' and she inscribes the present copies of all three works with both her real name and nom de plume. Service is set in the fictional department store Service's, and Heal's provided the furniture for the sets. In 1940 Smith married another Heal's colleague, Alec Beesley, but remained close to Ambrose Heal and his family - including his son Anthony who provided photographs for her autobiography and to whom she inscribes this copy of the second volume.
