WAUGH (EVELYN) Brideshead Revisited. The Sacred and Profane Memories of Captain Charles Ryder, ONE OF 50 SPECIALLY ISSUED PRE-PUBLICATION COPIES, half-title, cocked, untrimmed in publisher's stiff blue-grey wrappers with labels printed in blue and red on the upper wrapper, age-soiled, spine torn with a few small losses, upper hinge split, 8vo, Chapman & Hall, 1945 [1944] Footnotes: ONE OF 50 SPECIALLY ISSUED PRE-PUBLICATION COPIES, printed at the author's expense. The note on the upper wrapper reads: 'This edition is issued privately for the author's friends; no copies for sale. Messrs. Chapman & Hall earnestly request that until they announce the publication of the ordinary edition in the early part of 1945, copies will not be lent outside the circle for which they are intended, and no reference will appear to the book in the Press'. Waugh gave copies to his closest friends and associates. Having received opinions from various recipients Waugh revised the text prior to the first trade edition published in the following year. Provenance: 'M[argaret].M. Hollis, Mells/[19]45', ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Margaret was the wife of Christopher Hollis (1902-1907), Waugh's great friend whom he had met at Oxford, remaining close to the end of his life. Like Waugh, Hollis was a Catholic convert, closely associated to Robert Knox, and as well as being a Member of Parliament for Devizes in Wiltshire, an author and journalist. He wrote Evelyn Waugh (Writers and their Work. No. 46), published by the British Council in 1954. Brideshead was dedicated to Waugh's second wife Laura, who during their engagement had stayed with the Hollis family at their home at Mells in Somerset whilst Waugh himself stayed in a neighbouring house in the village, Evelyn often returning to visit in subsequent years; thence by descent to present owner.
