GANDHI (M.K, 'MAHATMA') Mahatma Gandhi at Work. His Own Story Continued. Edited by C.F. Andrews, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ('M.K. Gandhi'), with presentation inscription from the editor ('To Laurie Sawyer with affectionate remembrance from her friend C.J. Andrews, Nov. 27. 1931') and with a small gelatin silver photograph of the editor tipped-in on the front free endpaper, 4 plates, publisher's cloth, dust-jacket (upper joint split, short marginal tears), 8vo, George Allen & Unwin, 1931; together with a dust-jacketed second impression of Mahatma Gandhi: His Own Story, 1930 (2) Footnotes: A SIGNED COPY OF GANDHI'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, with gift inscription from the editor Charles Freer Andrews (1871-1940), campaigner for Indian independence, and a close friend of both Gandhi and Rabindranath Tagore. Andrews first met Gandhi in South Africa in January 1914 where he 'was adopted by Gandhi as a confidant' (ODNB), thereafter establishing a close working relationship, and 'When Gandhi went to London for the second round-table conference in 1931, Andrews accompanied him, and remained in England as the dominant member of the India Conciliation Group, set up in 1932 to argue the case for India's independence' (ODNB). This conference took place from 7 September 1931 to 1 December 1931, during which time Gandhi presumably signed the volume, and Andrews inscribed for his friend. Photographic cuttings relating to the Conference are inserted in the second mentioned title. Provenance: Laurie Sawyer, gift inscription from C.F. Andrews in 'At Work', 27 November 1931; Joseph Alan Slavin, blind-stamp on front free endpapers.
