CHURCHILL (WINSTON S.) An unsmoked 'Winston Churchill La Corona' cigar, wrapped loosely in original cellophane, in a modern plywood cigar box stamped 'WLSC/ Prime Minister' on lid, cellophane torn, cigar 185mm. long, box 280 x 158 x 47mm.; with letter of provenance and photocopies of press cuttings relating to Doidge's meeting with Churchill (small group) Footnotes: A CIGAR PRESENTED TO NEW ZEALAND POLITICIAN, FREDERICK WIDDOWSON DOIDGE, AT CHEQUERS IN 1945. In May 1945, the Northern Advocate reported that '...a long and intimate talk with Mr Churchill was enjoyed by Mr S. G. Holland and Mr F. W. Doidge when they lunched with the Prime Minister at Chequers on April 29...'. Another article of 20 June 1945 from the Otago Times describes how Churchill presented one of his cigars to Mr Holland '...He called a steward who produced a box of cigars made specially for him in Havana. On the band of the outsize cigar was embossed the name 'Winston Churchill'...'. A member of the party commented later that Mr Doidge also took Churchill up on his offer (Bay of Plenty Beacon, 20 November 1950). Frederick Widdowson Doidge began his career as a journalist and worked with Lord Beaverbrook in London after the First World War. On returning to New Zealand in 1935 he entered politics and became MP for Tauranga and a National Party member in the House of Representatives. In May 1945 he travelled to Europe with the leader of the opposition S.G. Holland during which he met Churchill, flew over France, Belgium and Holland and visited the Belsen concentration camp. He was appointed High Commissioner for New Zealand to the United Kingdom in 1951, where he stayed until his death in London in May 1954: '...Frederick Doidge was sometimes seen as more English than an Englishman, his loyalty to the Crown 'almost a religion'... one of the last of the 'Empire Citizens'...' (D.B. Waterson, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography, 2010, online). Provenance: Frederick Widdowson Doidge (1884-1954); his great niece Mary Bell; given by Mary Bell to the present owner.
