DICKENS (CHARLES) The Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas, FIRST EDITION, FIRST 'TRIAL' ISSUE, half-title and verso of title printed in green, title-page printed in green and red, 'Stave I' lettering on p.[1], 4 hand-coloured engraved plates (including frontispiece), and 4 wood-engraved illustrations in the text by John Leech, advertisement leaf at end, light green endpapers (rubbed), publisher's brown gilt- and blind-stamped cloth (with Todd first impression, first issue points concerning the binding), g.e., recased with spine ends stiffened, upper joint split (with upper cover near loose), 2 ink spots and minor bubbling to lower cover, age wear [Smith II.4], 12mo, Chapman & Hall, 1844 [but 1843] Footnotes: RARE 'TRIAL' FIRST EDITION, with half-title printed in green, the title in green and red dated 1844, and green endpapers. Prior to publication 'Dickens was disappointed with the appearance of the green titles, which turned drab, and the hand-coloured green end-papers, which dusted off and smudged, and had the title-page changed to red and blue, the half-title to blue, the date on the title-page changed from 1844 to 1843, and the endpapers changed to yellow, which did not require hand work' (Smith). Provenance: Martha Desmond, ink gift inscription from 'her most affectionate uncle Bartholomew ?Hartley...' on the front free endpaper.
