CHESTERFIELD (PHILIP DORMER STANHOPE, 4th Earl) Letters... to His Son Philip Stanhope, 2 vol., FIRST EDITION, THE BRADLEY MARTIN COPY, half-titles, engraved portrait, errata leaf at end of volume 2, off-setting from frontispiece to title, occasional spotting, contemporary full red morocco gilt, spines slightly dulled, yellow edges [Rothschild 596], 4to (295 x 230mm.), J. Dodsley, 1774 Footnotes: Eugenia Stanhope, the author's widow, arranged for the publication of the Letters the year after Chesterfield's death, bringing him 'more lasting fame, as well as censure, than all his political achievements. They have been greatly admired' (ODNB). Addressed to his son, from the ages of five to thirty-six they 'constitute one of the heaviest intellectual bombardments ever attempted' (ODNB). Samuel Johnson however dismissed them as teaching 'the morals of a whore and the manners of a dancing master'. Provenance: Richard Bull of Ongar, armorial bookplate; H. Bradley Martin, bookplate.
