ROYALTY - 1937 CORONATION A collection of approximately 100 proof copies, many annotated, of programmes, seating plans, lists of invitees etc. relating to the staging of the Coronation of George VI, with several accompanying letters, typed copy letters and plans, collected by Sir G.W. Wollaston, the Garter King of Arms, bound in 2 vol., [1936]-1937; together with a bound volume of 64 letters signed by (mostly) attendees at the Coronation congratulating Wollaston on the success of the event, and his appointment by the King as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in the 1937 Coronation Honours, uniform cloth, lettered 'Coronation. 1937. G.W.W. Garter' and 'Coronation Letters' on spines, 4to and small folio (3) Footnotes: 'BANKRUPT PEERS AND THEIR WIVES... SHOULD NOT BE SUMMONED IF IT COULD BE AVOIDED' - the Garter King of Arms' collection of annotated and corrected proof copies, along with copies of related correspondence, shedding light on the complexity of involved in the smooth running of a Royal Coronation. Sir Gerald Woods Wollaston (1874-1957), in his role as Garter King of Arms (Head of the College of Heraldry) was responsible for overseeing the organisation of the three great processions, ironing out constitutional problems (problem invitees, precedent of foreign Royals, etc.) in advance, input to wording of the Oath, and overall schedule. In his letter of congratulations to Wollaston, written the day after the Coronation (12 May) Harry Pirie-Gordon noted 'Never have I witnessed, even in St. Peter's in Rome, a ceremony which went so smoothly without hitch or faltering and produced so magnificent an effect'.
