IRELAND - IRISH LANGUAGE MARCEL (JEAN JOSEPH) Alphabet Irlandais, précédé d'une notice historique, littéraire et typographique, FIRST EDITION, half-title, title in English text in English and Irish, 5-line ink note pasted to margin of one leaf, publication date ('1803') added in ink to title, unevenly trimmed in early green boards, red morocco gilt spine label, worn, 8vo, Paris, L'Imprimerie de la Republique, Nivose an XII [1804] Footnotes: First edition of a pioneering study of the Irish language and typography by Jean Joseph Marcel (1776-1854). The Irish type was revised by Marcel from that used in the seventeenth century by the Propaganda Fide in Rome Provenance: John Hely-Hutchinson, 2nd Earl of Donoughmore (1757-1832), ownership inscription dated 1820 on front free endpaper. A early twentieth century letterpress label inside upper cover notes 'This book was left to Lord Donoughmore by Mrs Margaret Hely-Hutchinson, the daughter-in-law of the Honble.
