CHAPLIN (CHARLIE) Souvenir programme for the premiere of The Gold Rush at Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, Los Angeles, 36 pages plus embossed tissue endpapers, slight discolouration and creasing, original embossed boards in black, green and gold, 272 x 195mm., 26 June 1925; souvenir programme for The Gold Rush at The Tivoli, London, 24 pages, middle leaves loose, printed black and white stapled wrappers embossed in gold bearing photographic portrait of Chaplin, remains of price sticker, marked and worn, 247 x 188mm., 14 September 1925; Souvenir programme for the world premiere of A Woman of Paris, Criterion Theatre, London, 32 pages, stapled black paper wrappers embossed in gold, 252 x 178mm., 26 September 1923; Alhambra Theatre of Varieties, Programme for week ending April 1st 1893, featuring Mr Chas. Chaplin, 'Humorous and Descriptive Vocal Comedian', 4 pages on bifolium, discoloured, torn and worn, extensively mended with old tape, 270 x 210mm., Alhambra Theatre, North Street, Belfast, 1 April 1893; with four copies of Film-kurier, c.1926-1931; and souvenir booklet for The Great Dictator; with four cinema posters, one for Limelight, 1952, 558 x 710mm.; and three for The Chaplin Review, 1959, 280 x 355mm. (13) Footnotes: This collection of souvenir programmes includes a rare programme from 1893 featuring Charlie Chaplin's father, Chas. Chaplin ('Humorous and Descriptive Vocal Comedian') who shares the bill with Professor Leighton ('Sleight of Hand Expert'), The Two Fagans ('The Genuine Emperors of Hibernian Comedy') and Madlie Vonare ('The Wonderful Lady Contortionist'). Provenance: Max Reinhardt (1915-2002); his daughter and god-daughter of Charles Chaplin, Veronica Reinhardt (b.1964), the present owner. Proceeds from the sale will benefit MaxLiteracy (www.maxliteracy.org), a charity and educational initiative set up in memory of Max Reinhardt and his authors to stimulate literacy through the visual arts in partnership with museums, galleries, schools and writers.
