BRUNEL (MARC ISAMBARD) Lithographic overview and cross-section of the Thames Tunnel, with manuscript annotations and notes in ink by Marc Brunel and another hand ('Yearly progress of the Tunnel since the resumption of the works in 1836, up to 3rd of March 1840'), signed ('M.I. Brunel'), with cross section of the 'Great Descents', after Joseph Pinchback, one sheet, mounted on board and varnished, discolouration, dust-staining and marks, creasing with losses, frayed at edges, folio (420 x 668mm.), 1840 Footnotes: 'THE CARRIAGE DESCENT WAS TO HAVE BEEN 30 FEET FARTHER NORTH': PLAN FOR THE THAMES TUNNEL ANNOTATED BY MARC ISAMBARD BRUNEL. This annotated lithograph plan for Brunel's Thames Tunnel (described as 'The Eighth Wonder of the World' by contemporaries) shows an overview of the works, including the 'Plan of Descent for Carriages', the spiral ramps through which horses and wheeled traffic were to access the tunnel, which were never built. Our plan shows the various stages of the completion of the tunnel, with manuscript annotations marking progress as at 3 March in 1836, 1837, 1838, 1839 and 1840. On the Wapping side Brunel notes the '...original scite [sic] of the Footway Shaft. The carriage descent was to have been 30 feet farther north...'. Also depicted is a transverse section of the river, again annotated in manuscript, showing the dip of strata towards the Middlesex shore. This plan relates to a lithographic plan after Joseph Pinchback, sold in these rooms, 15 November 2017, lot 78, no. xxv, which depicts the unfinished tunnel. Another version, also annotated, is illustrated in The Brunels' Tunnel, showing the works as at June 1837 (ed. Eric Kentley, 2006, pp.48-49).
