BRESSANI (FRANCESCO GIUSEPPE) Breve relatione d'alcune missioni de PP. della Compagnia di Giesu nella Nuova Francia, FIRST EDITION, woodcut device on title, floriated woodcut initials, light toning, neatly filled in wormholes not affecting text, modern calf antique gilt, slipcase [Sabin 7734], 4to, Macerata, Heirs of Agostino Grisei, 1653 Footnotes: RARE FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF A JESUIT MISSION IN CANADA AMONGST THE IROQUOIS AND HURON TRIBES. The first section describes the flora and fauna of Canada, the customs of its people, and a positive account of the missions. The second section is dedicated to Bressani's capture by the Iroquois in 1644, describing his torture and beatings, and his rescue. The third part focuses on the sufferings of other missionaries at the hands of the Iroquois. 'What we find in the first chapters of Breve Relatione is an image of the noble savage, long before this idea was expressed by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1778.' (Joseph J. Pivato, An Italian Jesuit in Canada: Faith and the Imagination in the 'Breve Relatione', 1653). Provenance: Jesuits of Imola, early inscription on title.
