This is the central panel of the triptych Deuxième version du Triptyque 1944, produced in 1988 as a reworking of the artist's painted triptych entitled Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion. The figure in this central panel is a tormented soul, with teeth bared in a snarl and blindfolded, which conveys some of the anxiety and sorrow of the human experience. As part of a triptych referencing the crucifixion, there is always the possibility of redemption. Bacon's idiosyncratic style and portrayal of subjects of universal concern, such as loneliness, passion, anxiety and death, remain a source of fascination and controversy, ensuring his reputation as one of the most important artists of the 20th century.
