A PORTRAIT OF RAO RAJA BHAIRON SINGH OF SIKAR BY BHURA JAIPUR, SIKAR, CIRCA 1860 Opaque watercolor and gold on paper with applied seed pearls and glass beads; inscribed on top border in nagari translated as 'Maharaja Bhairon Singh of Sikar' and inscribed on lower border in nagari translated as 'Work of painter Bhura' Image: 9 1/2 x 6 3/4 in. (24.1 x 17.1 cm); Folio: 11 1/4 x 8 1/3 in. (28.6 x 21.1 cm) Footnotes: Another portrait of Bhairo(n) Singh (r. 1851-61), by the Jaipur artist Baldev, has an equally lavish use of gold to highlight the architecture (Francesca Galloway, Asia Week New York, 2014, no. 28).
