PORTRAIT OF A MARWAR THAKUR SMOKING A HOOKAH RAJASTHAN, POSSIBLY GHANERAO, MID-18TH CENTURY Ink and added colors on paper; recto with nastaliq inscription at the top, translated: 'this is the likeness of Thakur Zorawar Singh'; verso with an 18th-century outline tracing of a seated ruler and a single-line nagari inscription at the top. 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. (17.1 x 11.4 cm) Footnotes: Zorawar Singh was the maharaja of Bikaner between 1736-45. However, the drawing does not closely resemble his likeness in other paintings. Rather, turbans of this form were favored at Ghanerao, located just north of Kumbhalgarh Fort.
