Martin Battersby (British, 1914-1982) A selection of nine costume designs for Capriccio, Glyndebourne, 1973 or 1976 The opera composed by Richard Strauss and with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, including designs for the characters of La Roche (Marius Rintzler), The Count (Hakan Hagegard), Italian Tenor (Ricardo Cassinelli), Major Domo (Thomas Lawlor) and Monsieur Taupe (Hugues Cuenod) Each initialled 'MB' (bottom right) Variously in pencil, pen, ink and gouache on tracing paper 42 x 28cm (16 9/16 x 11in). (9) Footnotes: Battersby's introduction to the world of the stage and its costume and design began when he studied acting at RADA in London. His first commission was for the 1937 Old Vic production of Hamlet with Lawrence Olivier, which was quickly followed by further work with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford. In the 1940s he worked as assistant set designer to Cecil Beaton and on the 1945 production of Lady Windermere's Fan. This fascination in the theatrical followed him closely throughout his career and influenced and was influenced by his artistic practice. He worked on many of the operas at Glyndebourne over his career, most notably on the costume for Capriccio which was first performed in 1973, as in the present lot, as well as the set designs for Intermezzo, first performed in 1974.
