A PAIR OF SANCAI-GLAZED SQUARE DISHES AND A SANCAI-GLAZED QUATREFOIL 'LOTUS' DISH Liao Dynasty Each square dish with foliate edges and moulded with flowerheads and leaves accented in green and amber on a straw glazed ground, the base unglazed, 12.7cm (5in) wide; the shallow four-lobed dish with a flat amber and green-glazed rim decorated with a floral scroll, with a single large lotus bloom on the interior painted in dark green and amber on a straw-coloured ground, the unglazed base exposing the grey-buff ware, 27cm (10 5/8in) wide. Footnotes: 遼 三彩印花海棠式長盤及方盤 一組三件 Provenance: a European private collection, and thence by descent Sancai-glazed dishes such as the present lots were constructed over moulds with decorative motifs incorporated on it. The shape, based on gold and silver prototype, would have been relatively easy to produce in sheet metal and more difficult to make in clay.
