THE 1989 AND 1991 LOVE BALL AT THE ROSELAND BALLROOM. A collection of art and ephemera related to the 1989 and 1991 Love Ball to benefit DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation for AIDS), including: Julian Schnabel. Love Ball II. Color silkscreen on heavy paper, 127 x 101 cm, signed ('Julian Schnabel') at lower left, 26/500. Some wear at edges. WITH: Original printed invitation and tickets, standing room and silver patron seat; a press kit from Savvy Management; committee papers; 1989 program (2 copies); June 1991 edition of Paper with coverage of the Love Ball; 1991 donors packet; and 1991 program (2 copies). In the late 1980s, New York nightlife impresario Suzanne Bartsch was aghast at the devastation AIDS was wreaking on the fashion community. An employee suggested she donate a night's proceeds to fight AIDS, but she realized that wasn't enough, and so she reached out to Annie Flanders and Simon Doonan to coordinate a Love Ball, based on the competitive 'House Balls' of the black queer community in Harlem (popularized in the 1990 film Paris is Burning), in which teams compete while voguing on the runway. Bartsch invited individuals or companies to sponsor a house for a night of competition, and participants included CBS Records, Swatch Watch, Perry Ellis, Inc., Patrick Kelly and Cyndi Lauper. Lypsinka was the emcee (lipsynced, of course) and drag stars RuPaul, Lady Bunny and Pepper LaBeija were all in attendance. Contest judges included David Byrne, Fran Liebowitz, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Thierry Mugler and Iman. The first love ball raised $400,000 but was such an exhausting project that it took 2 years to stage another one. After the second, Bartsch paused the Love Ball until 2019, when she partnered with CFDA. Lot to be sold without reserve.
