FOUR SCREENPLAYS BY FRANCES MARION, INCLUDING THE CHAMP AND THE WIND. MARION, FRANCES. 1888-1973. 1. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'The Wind,' 104 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, Feb 24, 1927, bound with brads in MGM wrappers, upper cover detached but present, edges with chipping and loss. 2.---. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'The Champ / Instructions for superimposing titles,' approx. 40 pp, 4to, Culver City, December 23, 1931, in MGM wrappers with printed and typed label to upper cover, bound with brads, edges chipped. Unusual post-production script designed to help place titles in the final film. 3.---. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'Excess Baggage, play by John McGowan,' 100 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, April 3, 1929, housed in goldenrod MGM wrappers with printed and typed label to upper cover, staining, chipping and loss to covers. 4. ---. Mimeographed Manuscript, 'The Big House / Spanish Version,' 125 pp, 4to, Culver City, CA, August 22, 1930, bound with brads in MGM covers, chipping and loss to wrapper edges. All four stamped 'file copy.' Frances Marion was one of the most famous and successful screenwriters of the 1920s and 1930s. She began her career as a photographer's assistant before accepting a job at Lois Weber Productions, a rare film company run by a woman. From there she moved to Famous Players-Lasky where for many years she wrote scripts for Mary Pickford. She is the first person to win two Academy Awards: Best Writing of 1930 (for The Big House) and Best Story in 1932 for The Champ. Her screen credits include films for Pickford, Garbo, Marie Dressler, Myrna Loy and others. The Champ is perhaps the best remembered of the four films offered here, a tearjerker starring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, the film follows the story of a washed-up fighter and his beloved young son. The Big House is a crime drama set inside a penitentiary. The Wind directed by Victor Sjostrom, is based on the novel by Dorothy Scarborough and stars Lillian Gish as a young woman who arrives in the Texas desert amidst a drought and is forced into a marriage to survive. Excess Baggage is a comedy starring Billy Haines and was MGM's first picture 'in sound.' Today it is considered lost.
