Color printed wine label featuring Warhol's portrait of Baron de Rothschild, 150 x 105 mm, 1975, blind-stamped 'SPECIMEN' middle left, and signed by Warhol in black ink along right edge, matted and framed to 300 x 245 mm. 2. CHAGALL, MARC. Color-printed wine label, 145 x 100 mm, 1970, blind-stamped 'SPECIMEN' middle left, and signed by Marc Chagall in black ink. 3. LIPPOLD, RICHARD. Color-printed wine label featuring Lippold's graphic interpretation of grapes and vines, 150 x 100 mm, 1959, stamped 'SPECIMEN' middle left and signed by Lippold in pencil upper right. THREE SIGNED ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATED WINE LABELS. In 1924, two years after assuming control of the estate, Baron Philippe de Rothschild began insisting that his wines be bottled at the Chateau. To underline the importance of his initiative, he collaborated with artist Jean Carlu to design an original illustrated label for the vintage. In 1945, the tradition was solidified, and for every year after Chateau Mouton Rothschild has contracted with the world's most celebrated artists to design an original label for each vintage. Contributors have included Chagall, Warhol and Richard Lippold, as well as Miro, Picasso, Braques, Dali, Bacon, Freud, Haring, Hockney, Balthus, Koons, and more, creating a visual hallmark for the revered wines.
