Whatman wove paper, signed and inscribed 'trial proof for colour: not for sale' in pencil, one of four trial proofs aside from the numbered edition of 50, printed by Harley Brothers, Edinburgh, published by Curt Valentin Gallery, New York, with full margins Image 644 x 444mm (25 3/8 x 17 1/2in) Sheet 795 x 575mm (31 1/4 x 22 5/8in) Footnotes: Provenance From the collection of the artist's family, by descent to the present owner. Levinson records this work as being one of four proofs in various colours, but only lists this one signed 'John Piper' and marked 'trial proof for colour, not for sale'.
