Pair of Directoire Mahogany Fauteuils, attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Bernard Demay (1759-1848; maître 1784), Paris, France, c. 1795. The backward-scrolling stiles joined by a turned crest rail and conforming shaped tablet back intaglio-carved with geometric motifs surrounded by border of scallops containing fleur-de-lys, above the carved spandrels of a Gothic arcade with four free-standing baluster-turned spindles flanked by split baluster molding applied to stiles, which join the straight armrests raised on baluster-turned vertical supports on blocked base carved with reeded panels and single rosettes, connected by elliptic front rail of trapezoidal seat frame partially over-upholstered with later textured suede, raised on tapered forelegs terminating in toupie feet and saber legs at rear continuing from stiles, ht. 34 1/2, wd. 22 1/4, dp. 21 in.
