It was named after the famous Brazilian aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont, who met Louis Cartier in France and requested a readable watch while piloting. The design of the watch marked the significant shift from pocket watch and laid the foundation of Cartier's watchmaking style. The current example is in fairly well preserved condition, considering it being over 100 years old, with the numbers stamped the case back matching to the ones on inside case.
