Footnotes: Provenance Courtesy of the artist Exhibited Deggendorf, Stadtmuseum and Handwerksmuseum, Paper Global: International Triennale of Paper Art, 2018 Los Angeles, Loft at Liz's, A Cut Above, 2017 Artist statement: Lorraine Bubar's interest in cutting her work out of paper developed out of a love of traveling the world and her desire to honor its diverse cultures through an art form that is found in so many cultures, ranging from Eastern Europe and China to Mexico. Her painterly papercuts, cut with an x-acto knife and layered handmade colored papers made in countries where she has traveled, connect her to this extensive cultural heritage. Bubar captures the magic and mysteries of diverse natural environments, such as in the many National Parks where she has been the Artist in Residence. She also creates work about current urban landscapes, illustrating the dramatic disparity in cities, including homelessness, overdevelopment, and traffic. Bubar's work brings attention to threatened places and species and illustrate the hierarchy within our cities and our wilderness.
