Italian School, early 19th Century An album of 43 views of Rome the title page twice inscribed 'CG Lamb - given me by Lady Westmorland' and dated 1817, many of the views inscribed, including 'Colosseo; Arco di Giano Quadrifronte; Trajan's Column; Sepolcro di Cajo Sesto; Tempio di Minerva Medica; Arco di Septimo Severo; Sepolcro di Adriano; Tempio di Agrippa o Panteon; S. Giovanni in Laterano; S. Paolo; S. Maria Maggiore; S. Pietro; Monte Cavallo and Tempio di Bacco' pencil with brown wash, some with touches of other colours, bound into an album with gold-tooled green calf end papers and brass-bound cloth cover emblazoned with a crowned phoenix 9.2 x 14.2cm (3 5/8 x 5 9/16in). Footnotes: This album belonged to Lady Caroline Lamb (1785-1828), the aristocratic novelist, who is best remembered for her affair with Lord Byron whom she first met in 1812 in the home of her friend Lady Westmorland. The much younger wife of the Earl of Westmorland, the Countess had a somewhat racy reputation having left her marital home in 1810 to establish herself as a society hostess in London but her lifestyle attracted so much disapproval that in 1814 she moved to Rome, where she presumably acquired this album.
