ATTRIBUTED TO UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI (1797-1861) Edo period (1615-1868), mid-19th century Two shita-e (preliminary drawings) in ink on paper: the first, a bijinga of O tsumetai (Oh Cool!) from the series Sankai medetai zue (Celebrated Treasures of Mountains and Seas), depicting a young woman placing her hands to her mouth, part of the title inscription in the upper right section, 37.3cm x 24.5cm (14 11/16in x 9 5/8in); the second with sketches of four male figures overlapping each other, 32cm x 23.1cm (12 11/16in x 9 1/8in); both unsigned, both in a card mount. (2). Footnotes: By repute, the first drawing was exhibited at the Kuniyoshi retrospective exhibition in 1961 at the Victoria and Albert Museum, commemorating the centenary of the artist's death.
