Fine Second Model Maynard Carbine, c. 1865. Serial number 20178, 20 in., .50 caliber blued round rifled barrel with folding leaf rear sight, the octagonal breech marked 'W' on the left side; case hardened frame marked on the right side 'MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO/CHICOPEE FALLS.' and on the left side 'EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE./MAY 27, 1851./DEC. 6, 1859.' with sling bar and ring; walnut stock with 'GWS' cartouche for sub-inspector George W. Sherman, and 'JM' cartouche for inspector James Mills who inspected Maynard carbines from about June 22, 1864 through May 1865; with steel butt plate. CONDITION: Very good overall condition with bluing largely intact on the barrel with areas of subtle thinning and light oxidation, bright bore with sharp rifling; case color on the frame, hammer, and lever are quite evident, but thinning, action functions properly; stock has minor blemishes and soiling. Overall lg. 36 3/4 in. Footnotes: Provenance This carbine is believed to have been owned by Wesley Leazenby (1832-1904) who served in the 6th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry. Leazenby enlisted in 1862 and was wounded twice, the last time at the Battle of Painter Creek, August 8, 1862, where he was shot through the shoulder. Wesley Leazenby likely obtained this carbine shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War.
