Fine Thomas Earle New England Fowler, Leicester, Worcester County, Massachusetts, c. 1780. 50 1/4 in., .63 caliber barrel with shell engraving at the breech, raised top flat extending to the silver blade front sight; flat lock plate with double line border engraving, stepped and pointed tail with shell and foliate engraving and 'THOMAS/EARLE' engraved below the faceted and unbridled pan; cherry stock with raised carving around the lock mortice, side plate plateau, and trigger guard, relief carved foliate decoration around the breech plug tang and line carving along the barrel and rammer channels; furniture includes a brass trigger guard with triangular leaf finial and foliate engraved bow, brass butt plate with pointed leaf tang decorated with engraved foliate shell device, silver thumb piece, flat brass cloud form side plate with engraved shell and scroll border, three sheet brass rammer pipes and a sheet brass entry pipe; wood rammer with brass tip and steel jag end. Overall lg. 66 1/4 in. Condition: Barrel and lock toned to deep brown with pitting at the vent and pan areas; lock top jaw and jaw screw are replaced; stock has a stable, tight crack on the left side in front of the side plate and a short sliver loss on the left side of the barrel channel.
