New Hampshire Monkey Head Pommel Sword, c. 1775-83. Brass hilt with slotted counter-guard, tapering knuckle bow connecting to a lion's head pommel, smooth walnut grip with brass ferrule at the bottom; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and three narrow fullers. Blade lg. 32 7/8, overall lg. 38 1/2 in. Condition: Brass toned to deep greenish yellow/brown, grip has light scratches, hilt has considerable movement on the blade tang; blade toned to deep brown and has scattered shallow nicks on the blade edge and two spots of black paint. Footnotes: Provenance The William H. Guthman Collection, Part I, Arms & Militaria, Bonhams & Butterfields, October, 12, 2006, Lot 109. Catalog note regarding this sword states 'One of a group of three similar swords found together in an attic in New England.' Literature This sword is illustrated and described in William H.
