Provenance: JACQUES DE STALLA (1596-1657) a leading exponent of the neoclassical style of Parisina Atticism (ownership inscriptions: 'Io apparteno a S. Stella Pittore Francese 1632' and 'Je suis A. Stella 1636' at the end of the Old and New Testament); SIR JOSHUA REYNOLDS (1723-1792) English painter and famous portraitist (ownership inscriptions: his signature on front free endpaper and second leaf, the estate stamp on front free endpaper and a note in his hand on a blank preceding the 1570 New Testament: 'The following prints of the new Testament is of the first Edition there is another Edition printed in 1588. The prints are the same but the letter press is in Italian instead of the French both the Preface and the writing under the prints'). First Italian edition of this masterpiece of mid-16th century wood engraving. Bernard Salomon (1506-1561), also known as Bernard le Petit was inspired by the Mannerist school of Fontainebleau. Rouillé's complete picture Bible, the Old Testament in second edition (first 1564), the New Testament in first edition. Following the success of his fellow Lyon printer, Jean de Tournes, Rouillé pursued a similar project to publish small-format picture Bibles with accompanying verses. Fairfax Murray French 41; Mortimer French 92 (1564 edition) and 93. An amazing compilation of these renaissance woodcut illustrations.
