A set of fourteen Regency mahogany dining chairs Circa 1820, probably by Gillows Including two armchairs, each with a line inlaid tablet toprail with reeded ends and surmounted by a gadrooned cresting, above a scrolled horizontal splat centred by a scallop shell, on channelled and splayed square section legs, some chairs with an old printed paper depository label to the underside, each armchair approximately: 56cm wide x 57cm deep x 85.5cm high, each side chair approximately: 48.5cm wide x 53cm deep x 85.5cm high, (19in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 33 1/2in high) (14) Footnotes: For a related set of Regency dining chairs with similar shell carving see Christie's, London, 16 September 2004, The Glory of Gillows, lot 40. Comparable shell carving to that on the offered chairs appear on a number of hall chairs executed by the firm of Gillows, including some stamped by Gillows which are illustrated in V. Slowe, Treasures from Abbot Hall, Kendal, 1989, Kendal, p. 6. Also, the gadrooning, which is evident on the toprails of the present examples, is often a distinctive and recurrent characteristic of the output of Gillows during the late Regency and George IV period.
