A fine Troughton & Simms 3 1/2-inch brass refracting telescope on stand, English, mid 19th century, signed TROUGHTON & SIMMS LONDON, the tube with rack and pinion focusing and star finder mounted in parallel, supported on tapering column with slow motion azimuth adjustment by rack and pinion and long mahogany handle, altitude adjustment by telescopic supporting rod, on all brass tripod stand, in fitted mahogany case with alternate eyepieces and filters, length of tube 38in (965mm), case 7in x 40in x 15in (180mm x 1020mm x 380mm) Footnotes: The telescope is described in the 1852 publication by William Simms The Achromatic Telescope which states '...it is especially adapted to the purpose of the traveller by whom considerable optical power with portability.....the legs are formed of tubes slipping within each other.'
