DICKENS TO JOHN PRITT HARLEY. DICKENS, CHARLES. 1812-1870. Autograph Letter Signed ('Charles Dickens') to John Pritt Harley, 1 p, 8vo, ink on a folded sheet, Devonshire Terrace, March 7, 1844, matted and framed. A WITTY INVITATION TO HIS FRIEND JOHN PRITT HARLEY. John Pritt Harley was a prominent comic actor and singer. Dickens had met Harley in 1836, and at the behest of John Braham, writing in the part of Stokes in The Village Coquettes specifically for him. The play opened on December 6th, and by December 16th Dickens had completed the dedication to Harley that would appear in the printed edition the following year. By 1844 they saw each other less frequently, and Dickens had had to cancel a previous engagement with Harley due to a cold. In full: 'Will you dine with me here (I shall hardly know you by sight) next Sunday at 6 exactly? We have no party.' SOLD TO BENEFIT THE BLACK MOUNTAIN INSTITUTE. UNLV's Black Mountain Institute is an international literary arts center that champions writers and storytellers through programs, fellowships, student scholarships, and community engagement. BMI is also home to the first-ever City of Asylum program in the U.S, which provides safe haven to writers who have been persecuted for their literary work—so that they may live and write freely without censorship, risk of imprisonment, or threats against their lives.
