FIRST EDITION of Barlow's epic paean to Columbus, SUBSCRIBER'S COPY, SIGNED BY FOUNDING FATHER ELIAS BOUDINOT. Boudinot served as the President of the Continental Congress during the last days of the revolution in 1782-1783, and George Washington appointed him director of the U.S. Mint in 1795. In January 1793, Boudinot submitted to the House a bill to replace the image of Liberty on the newly designed American coinage, with the head of Columbus, and supported his idea with notes on Columbus's character.
