Lucie Rie Open bowl, designed for the 50th wedding anniversary of Lord and Lady Chorley, Stanmore, United Kingdom, 1975 Stoneware, golden manganese and brown glazes, with incised concentric circular decoration. 5.1 cm high, 21.8 cm diameter Underside impressed with artist's seal and incised THEO & KATHARINE XV·IV·XXV·LXXV· Footnotes: Provenance Collection of Lord and Lady Chorley, Stanmore, United Kingdom, 1975 Thence by descent to the present owner The present bowl was privately commissioned by Gillian, Roger, and Patrick Chorley, London, United Kingdom in 1975, to celebrate 50 years of their parent's marriage, Lord Robert Samuel Theodore 'Theo' Chorley, and Lady Katharine Chorley, known as the 'golden' wedding anniversary. The underside is incised with Lord Chorley's personal nickname and Lady Chorley's first name, along with the dates of their wedding and anniversary, '15·4·25·75', or 15th April 1925 - 1975. Lucie Rie was a friend of Lord and Lady Chorley during and after World War II, during which time the family commissioned a number of works directly from the artist.
