A Cased Pair Of Royal 32-Bore Percussion Rifled Pistols Built For Prince Edward, Duke Of Kent And Strathern (1767-1820) By John Manton, London, Late 18th Century Rebuilt from flintlock in the mid-19th century, with octagonal sighted barrels (old wear and light pitting overall) each signed in capitals along the top flat, case-hardened breeches, border engraved tangs each decorated with a trophy and foliage, flat bevelled locks each signed in capitals, characteristically cusped on the upper edge, and decorated with foliage at the time of conversion, hammers en suite and each with safey-catch behind, figured full stocks (one with minor old splits at the muzzle) each with dark horn fore-end cap and chequered rounded butt, blued steel trigger-guards and turned ramrod-pipes, the former each with large pineapple finial and decorated with a martial trophy and foliage on the bow, silver escutcheons engraved with owner's crowned initial within the Garter ring, and original horn-tipped ramrods: in lined and fitted case (lid replaced) from the time of conversion with steel bullet mould and brass inventory tags numbered '1318' and '1319', London proof marks 23 cm. barrels Footnotes: Provenance The Gewehrkammer of the Kings of Hanover, Blankenburg until removed to Schloss Marienburg in 1945 Sotheby's Hanover, Schloss Marienburg, Works of Art From The Royal House of Hanover, 5 October 2005, lot 882 Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathern was the 4th son of King George III and father of Queen Victoria.
