A 22-Bore Flintlock Holster Pistol By John Hosey Of London, Circa 1700 With swamped two-stage barrel (possibly relengthened), plain tang, border engraved rounded lock (cock and mainspring replaced) signed in capitals and decorated with foliate scrollwork, 18th century full stock (fore-end mostly replaced) carved with a shell behind the barrel tang, iron mounts comprising side-plate chiselled as a serpent with pierced scrolling tail, chiselled escutcheon retaining traces of engraved profile portrait bust, spurred pommel with faint traces of engraved decoration and chiselled grotesque mask cap, trigger-guard with pierced foliate finial and faint traces of an engraved bird on the bow, replaced baluster ramrod-pipe, and later wooden ramrod (iron parts pitted), London proof marks and indistinct barrelsmith's mark, probably of Hosey 30.5 cm. barrel Footnotes: John Hosey was apprenticed to John Price in 1678. Free of the Gunmakers' Company in 1687 he was elected Master in 1719.
