A 22-Bore Flintlock Silver-Mounted Turn-Off Pistol By Griffin, Bond Street, London, Mid-18th Century, Silver Maker's Mark Of John Allen With three-stage cannon barrel numbered '1', the breech numbered to correspond and engraved 'BOND STREET LONDON' beneath the steel-spring, signed in capitals along the top and engraved with a band of foliage behind, waisted border engraved tang decorated with foliage, border engraved action, cock (retaining screw replaced) and steel, sliding trigger-guard safety-catch decorated with a flower-head on the bow, swelling figured butt (repaired at the pommel), cast and chased mounts comprising pierced foliate side-plate involving a grotesque profile head and a vacant cartouche, vacant escutcheon within a foliate border, and grotesque mask butt-cap (old wear and pitting), London proof marks 13.8 cm. barrel Footnotes: Benjamin Griffin, father of Joseph, was apprenticed to Samuel Harrison in 1719.
