Admiral John Borlase Warren: A rare South Staffordshire enamel patch box, circa 1800 Printed in black with a dove and hands clasped in friendship, with inscription 'Valour United' above 'Nelson & Warren Triumphant', with a pale pink base and mirror affixed to interior lid, 4.4cm wide Footnotes: This box likely refers to Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren (1753-1822) rather than Vice-Admiral Frederick Warren (1775-1848). Borlase Warren played a key role in the French Revolutionary Wars in 1794 and 1795. He also commanded a squadron responsible for stopping French naval forces reaching Ireland during the Battle of Tory Island in 1798, the French having been entreated by the United Irishmen to assist in their rebellion against the British. It was here that Wolfe Tone was captured aboard a French ship, shortly afterward being court-martialled and sentenced to death. John Borlase Warren also served as MP for Marlowe and sought a career in diplomacy alongside his naval command.
