Admiral Lord Howe: A creamware mug and plate, circa 1795 The mug printed in black with a portrait of the 'Right Hon. Earl Howe, Commander of his Majesty's Fleet in the Channel', a black and blue painted border below the rim, 9.5cm high, the lobed plate most probably Liverpool, printed in black with a ferocious naval battle titled 'A Representation of the Glorious Defeat of the French Fleet of Brest by Earl Howe June the 1st 1794', 24.3cm diam (2) Footnotes: Provenance C H B Caldwell Collection, old paper label (plate) These rare pieces are illustrated and discussed by John and Jennifer May, Commemorative Pottery (1972), figs.146 and 147. Howe first held command of the Channel Fleet in 1782, but the mug most likely celebrates his taking up of that role again in 1793 and his subsequent victory over the French at the Glorious 1st June 1794, the battle depicted in detail on the plate.
